Brief Introduction of Center for Ecological & Environmental Studies

Center for Ecological & Environmental Studies (CEES) was established in 1960 with the former name Eco-Geobotany Department, which contain simply a team of Geobotany. After then another team, agrology was formed in 1962; and given the Name of the Department of Phytoecology since 1976; Now, it changed to the Center for Ecological & Environmental Studies since 2013.

Areas of focus

ØBiodiversity and ecosystem function dynamic

ØKarst ecology and restoration ecology

ØEcological effects of planted forest and management

ØTypical terrestrial ecosystem response and feedback to global changes

ØWatershed ecology and regional eco-environmental security

ØEco-design and environmental assessment for major development programs

We have 23 faculties whose 4 are professors( 3 of them are tutors for M. Sc students), 5 associate professors, and 5 with PhD, and 8 graduate students.

In the past ten years, CEES carried on several key projects on karst ecosystem studies from national, and provincial foundation, which given us an advantage on biodiversity dynamic and rehabilitation in karst terrain. In 2012, CEES started a  project “key technological research and demonstration of vegetation restoration in the degradation ecosystem and ecotourism management in typical tour zone”, a National Key Technology Research and Development Program by Ministry of Science and Technology of China, which is the first project being taken charch by Guangxi supporting by National Key Technology Research and Development Program. CEES has published more than 20 monographs including co-complied of Chinese Vegetation, Chinese Sapium, Chinese Forest, Guangxi Nature Reserve, Guangxi Forest et al and complied of Population Ecological studies on Abies yuanbaoshanensis and Taxus chinensis. Over 400 papers were published in both national and international journals which 10 plus were in the journals listed into Science Citation Index. CEES has got more than 10 patents, and won more than 20 prize of Scientific and Technological Progress Award both at national and provincial honors. .

Research platform:

(1) The Karst Biodiversity Conservation and Restoration Ecology Base for International Sciences & Technology Cooperation of Guangxi was established in 2012, which to enhance international exchange and cooperation on projects and expertee.

(2) “Ecological monitoring tower for Planted forest “were set up at Huang Mian Eucalyptus forest, which is the first ecological monitoring tower in Guangxi. A long term monitor on the tower and its around zone experience will providing data of physiology, microclimate, hydrology, soil environment, biodiversity, with which we can assess the ecological impact of Eucalyptus and its responses and feedback to global changes .

(3) “Guangxi Tropical and Subtropical Long-term Forest Diversity and Function Monitoring Network” is formed, including national parks of Nonggang, Mulun, Shiwangdashan, Yuanbaoshan, Maoershan, and Huaping. The Nonggang Forest Dynamics Plots is unique for its karst seasonal rainforest locating at north tropical zone. Plots join to share networks of the Center for Tropical Forest Science (CTFS), the Chinese Forest Biodiversity Monitoring Network (CForBio), and Chinese Forest Ecosystem Observation and Research NetworkCFERN.

(4) Soil Tested Lab and physi-ecology Lab. Element and compound can be tested in Soil Tested Lab. Environmental modeling experience and experiences under a control condition of moisture, radiation and temperature can be established in physic-ecology Lab.

(5) Equipments. CEES is equipped with instruments including InteliMet meteorological system, LI-6400 Portable Photosynthesis System, LAI-2000 Plant Canopy Analyzer, LI-3000A Portable Leaf Area Meter, MODEL 1000 water potential Chamber, Granier’s sap flow system, atomic absorption spectrometry, , High Resolution spectrometer, and portable chlorophyll fluorometers, eddy system etc.
